Black Leather Hammock Chair
Mogens Voltelen & Niels Vodder, Denmark, c. 1930

£3,600

Description:

The interplay of straight and curved lines within the chair’s design is very visually satisfying. The rhythm of lines is evident not only in the mahogany wood frame but within the leather too. The seat and back having a hammock construction mean the leather is allowed to bow naturally.
The continuous curve that the back legs are carved into and the apron (wooden rail across the front) at the front of the chair both echo the exact arc of the leather hammock seat. Emphasising the subtle and organic curves are the nicely patinated brass upholstery nails that hold the leather in place. At the back of the chair they follow the curve but at the seat they sit in a straight row that is off set on each of the siderails.

This chair was designed by Mogens Voltelen, a Danish designer known for his iconic hammock chairs in c.1930- the start of his career. This chair therefore is a rare example of his early work with its original leather. Made by Niels Vodder.
