Six Wiener Stadthalle Chairs
Roland Rainer, 1952

Description:

A set of six stackable Wiener Stadthalle chairs, designed by Austrian architect Roland Rainer circa 1952.
Built between 1954 & 58, the Wiener Stadthalle (Viennese City Hall), for which the chair's were designed and made, is Austria’s largest event centre. Today, over 300 events are hosted annually which means the building is visited by around 1 million visitors, each year. The Wiener Stadthalle is one of Rainer's most significant works and symbolised the sense of political and cultural renewal at that time.
Like the architecture of the original Halls, the frames of Rainer's chairs are eye catchingly angular. In contrast to the base structure, the seat is curved and tapers delicately at the front and at the top of the back. The subtlety of the details in the seat mean they could easily be taken for granted. Nevertheless, they succeed as our subconscious instantaneously reads the seat as comfortable, clean sturdy and safe.
Although, the set of six chairs available could possibly have been used in the Wiener Stadthalle for as long as 35 years they remain in very good condition. The wood is scratched and has minor chips from use but ultimately the chairs have benefitted from the passing of time as they now boast a glorious honey coloured patina.
