Four Green & Natural Rush 'Kirkestole' (Church Chairs)
Kaare Klint, c. 1930

£1,800

Description:

A set of four vintage vibrant green, Model 4133, Kirkestole (Church Chairs) designed by Kaare Klint, circa 1930. Originally, the Kirkestol was conceived for Grundtvig's Church, Copenhagen, a rare example of Expressionist church architecture designed by K. Klint’s father, Peder Vilhelm Jensen-Klint.
The four legs and all six stretches of the chair are turned wood. The four slats between the elegantly shaped back legs, which create the high back, are curved and shaped pieces of flat wood. The generously sized seat is woven in natural rush.
Simple but well-proportioned, and extremely well-constructed, Klint’s #4133 chair takes inspiration from Shaker furniture. However, the utilitarian style and honest forms found in Shaker furniture, made in the USA from the late-18th century, derive from historic vernacular British designs. Members of the Shaker religious group took with them when emigrated, from the UK to the USA, the blueprints of vernacular pieces such as the English ladder-back chair -which is the earlier reference point in the case of the Kirkestol’s evolution.
