Model No 63 Chair
by Alvar Aalto

Description

An early, completely original, Model No 63 chair designed by Alvar Aalto in 1935 and made by Artek, Finland, before 1940. The 63 is instantly recognisable as an Aalto design as the chair incorporates the standardised leg made using his internationally patented method for bending wood. Aalto’s first patent application for the process he and Otto Korhonen developed was submitted in England, 8/11/1933. This was probably due to the UK being one of the world's largest markets at this point for commodities under the umbrella term 'Scandinavian' modern, thanks largely to the Nordic design importer Finmar who most likely brought this 63 chair to the UK. The standardised leg not only made the furniture designs’ it was incorporated into more affordable to produce but sturdy and aesthetically sleek. Further, regards the 63 specifically, the slender yet broad seat and supportive backrest make the chair incredibly versatile -it looks equally great as a desk, dining or occasional chair. The deep yet vibrant red vinyl upholstery is original and contrasts brilliantly with the honey coloured birch.
