Padlock Trinket Box/Ashtray
by Carl Auböck II
Description:A rare model 3317 cast brass ashtray/trinket box in the form of a padlock designed by Carl Auböck II in 1935 and made by Werkstätte Carl Auböck between 1935 and 1940.
The escutcheon swings left and right to allow passage through to the space inside the main body of the lock. Originally, it was intended that ash was tapped through the ‘peephole’. However, today, jewellery could be kept in the lock. To access the items stored inside the object, the face of the padlock is simply lifted opposite from where the hinge is fitted.
The hefty nature of the padlock means the piece is not only useable but satisfying to use. Further, the consideration that has gone into the design and it’s substantiality are obvious to perceive resulting in the item being visually attractive -the feature of any surface.
