1940s Armchair
Ole Wanscher
Circa 1945

Description:

A spectacularly restraint yet sculptural armchair designed by Ole Wanscher in 1945 and made by cabinet maker A. J. Iversen before 1950. The interplay of straight & curved lines within the chair’s design is perhaps what is most noticeable in this piece. The rhythm of lines is evident not only in the exposed rosewood wood frame but within the seat too. Satisfyingly, the curved seat & back, echo the continuous arch that the back leg & back rest are carved into. Doing something completely different to the main part of the chair are the arms which are much more idiosyncratically sculpted and resultantly very tactile. The chair is newly upholstered in burnt orange coloured leather which marries with the deep rosewood excellently. Ole Wanscher was one of Denmark’s most prolific and highly considered designers and this chair, with thanks to master cabinet maker A. J. Iversen, is a superb example of his deep understanding and skill.
