Pair of Windsor Chairs
Ove Boldt, 1947
Description:
A pair of vintage Windsor chairs, designed by Ove Boldt in 1947 and made by Fritz Hansen circa 1950.
The model 1638 chair is a Danish architect’s version of a ‘Windsor Chair’, a vernacular British design thought to date back to the 16th century.
The chair is built around a solid wood seat. All the chairs’ uprights and legs are pushed into the carved saddle shaped seat. The two horizontal lines in the back rest (the top rail and arm piece) have been steam bent to create their continuous semi-circular shape.
Although made entirely of tenon jointed solid beech, the masterful construction means the generously wide seat is both surprisingly strong and comfortable.
Both chairs are in excellent condition. All joints remain strong, and the finish of the wood is beautifully rich and consistent.
