AX Table
Hvidt & Mølgaard
Denmark, 1950s
Description:
An 'AX' table designed by Peter Hvidt & Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen. This table was made during the 1950s for Fritz Hansen.
Peter Hvidt & Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen designed their 'AX' collection in the late 1940s. Like their 'Portex' collection, the use of laminated wood featured strongly in their designs, allowing for lightweight, yet durable, curves to be created in a single, continuous piece of wood. These collections were designed with export in mind; petite, lightweight pieces that could travel easily and pieces that crucially required little re-assembly on arrival.
The key feature of this 'AX' table are it's distinctive legs; inlaid with teak, these legs taper to a fine point like a hair-pin, yet branch out in wide half-moons towards the tabletop.
The addition of inlaid teak to the tapered legs of the 'AX' table adds further dimension to this deceptively complex piece, and is a detail echoed in a chair from the same collection. This 'AX' chair can be found here.
