“Coat Tree” Nanna Ditzel
An early first edition “Coat Tree” or hat stand designed by Nanna Ditzel and made by Poul Kold Savværk, Kerteminde, Denmark, 1963.
The model ND1 was referred to as ‘a piece of sculpture for coats’ in early sales catalogues and it is clear to see why -especially regards the versions like this made of solid Oregon pine. The grain of the wood, like the markings on a Moore or Hepworth sculpture, speak of the creators’ excitement for modern shapes in tandem with the shapes found in nature itself.
Made entirely of carved wood except for six small brass pins which hold the rhythmic arms in place, the stand is both warm and restraint. This is partially due to the contrast of the natural golden honey coloured patina of the wood and the use of only geometric shapes.
Despite many years of love and use the tree is structurally sounds and shows only moderate signs of age related wear.
