Square Birch Table
Alvar Aalto
Finland, 1940s

£2,700

Description:

A square table with laminated, L-shaped legs. Designed by Alvar Aalto and manufactured by Artek, the furniture company founded by Aalto in Helsinki in 1935, during the late 1940s- early 1950s.

Regarded as one of the world's most influential and well-known Nordic designers, Alvar Aalto was one of the most crucial proponents of organic design in the twentieth century and his use of natural materials and fascination with organic forms have become quintessential symbols of Finnish design.

The design of this square table, fashioned in the birch, utilises Aalto's most recognisable, patented design; the 'L-Leg'. Referred to by Aalto as “the little sister of the architectural column", the distinctive curves of the "L-Leg" were not only groundbreaking in terms of their appearance, the construction of the bent, laminated strips meant that the "L- Leg" was both visually striking in the spareness of its construction, yet also deceptively strong.

This well-proportioned table is large enough to be used as a desk or dining table for two, yet small enough to function discreetly as a side table. Over time, the wood has developed an even, rich patina emphasising the multiple layers of veneer used to craft its distinctive 'L-Legs'.
