Large, Early Production, Table
Alvar Aalto, 1935

Description
A large table designed by Alvar Aalto in 1935 and produced by Artek, Finland, before 1939. The table is instantly recognizable as an Aalto design as it incorporates the standardized leg made using his internationally patented method for bending wood.

Aalto’s first patent application for the process he and Otto Korhonen developed was submitted in England, 1933. This was probably due to the UK being one of the world's largest markets at this point for commodities under the umbrella term 'Scandinavian' modern, thanks largely to the Nordic design importer Finmar who brought this specific table to the UK before WWII.

The standardised leg not only made the furniture designs’ it was incorporated into more affordable to produce but sturdy and aesthetically sleek. Indeed it was designs like this table which inspired Artek’s name –their name like their furniture is born from combining traditional craftspersonship and new technology / art & technology.
The large and robust tabletop of this piece has been lacquered mat black and this contrasts brilliantly with the honey coloured solid birch legs.

The size and durability of the tabletop also means it would work excellently as a family dining table or a proper working desk. The table sits 6 comfortably or 8 close friends. Underside of table retains original Ivorine Finmar plaque.
