Prairie School
Oak & Glass Table Lamp
United States, 1910s
Description:
An oak table lamp with textured glass panels, likely made in the United States between 1910 and 1920.
Influenced by the British Arts and Crafts movement, the Prairie School developed in the United States between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In comparison to its British counterpart, the Prairie School didn't entirely reject modernity in favour of medievalism. Instead, it tempered modernity with a fondness for nature, looking simultaneously at new ways to live and organise the home, whilst looking backwards to the materials and values of America's prairie landscape; prioritising natural, native materials and traces of craftspersonship.
Frank Lloyd Wright was a key proponent of the Prairie School, and advocated an architectural style so closely dedicated to nature that the final plan should appear as though it had grown on the site as though "married to the ground". Subsequently buildings by Wright have a greater horizontal than vertical line, literally grounded closer to the earth than the sky.
This oak table lamp perfectly aligns itself not only with the Prairie Style but with Wright's own architectural visions. The supporting struts of the lamp, which support the glass shade, have a distinctly architectural quality. A notable comparison can be made between this lamp and the sloping, cantilevered roof of the Frederick C. Robie House, built in 1909.
Art glass was a recurring material used throughout Wright's projects and is a material showcased beautifully in this lamp. Most visible when viewed from the side, the clear glass has a unique, rippled texture, which almost mimics the effect of looking through water rather than glass.
This lamp also comes with a second set of glass panels, that can be installed by deconstructing the lamp shade. The clear panels can be swapped for a full set of pebble-textured amber glass, or used alongside the clear panels to create an alternating pattern evocative of Wright's own explorations in stained glass.
This lamp has been rewired with a UK standard plug and woven, black, antique-style cord with in-line switch.
