"Hand Grenade" Pendant A110 Alvar Aalto

Description

A single Model A110 pendant better known as the 'Hand Grenade' light designed by Alvar Aalto. The light was designed for the Finnish Engineers' Association, Helsinki. A building planned by Aalto between 1948 and 1952. Aalto also used the design in the Council Chamber of Säynätsalo Town Hall. Subsequently the light was put into production and this pendant is an early first edition by Valaistusyö, Finland, made circa 1952.
The shade is made from brass which is lacquered in black externally and polished internally, a perforated reflector in polished brass hangs at the bottom.
