Blue Relief
Ceramic Table Lamp
Lauritz Hjorth
Denmark, 1940s
Description:
A blue-glazed ceramic table lamp decorated with figures in relief. Manufactured by Lauritz Hjorth of Bornholm, Denmark, during the 1940s.
The base features stylised figurines in ornamental poses and is reminiscent of a mythological scene. The motifs include a monkey and a woman playing a stringed instrument in a frieze-like composition.
The design is believed to be attributable to Gertrud Kudielka (1896–1984), an artist known for her imaginative, fabulating style and association with several Danish studios, including Hjorth.
The base is fully hand-marked on the bottom with “L. Hjorth” and stamped with the stag symbol, which is the emblem of the Hjorth workshop.
The lamp has been rewired to UK standards with a brown, antique-style cord and fitted with a natural vellum empire lampshade.
