Paavo Tynell, Finland, 1940s

£8,000

Description:

A 1940s five-arm chandelier designed by Finland’s most renowned lighting designer, Paavo Tynell. Handcrafted in the Taito workshop, this chandelier brilliantly showcases Tynell’s attention to detail and ability to create lighting with an elegant warming glow.

This design boasts five identical undulating polished brass arms which sit like branches within a central ribbed cup. Five brass wires twisted into the shape of petals also subtly emerge upwards from the cup at the centre of the light, a detail which Tynell is well Known for. Each bulb rests atop a frosted glass disc and is covered by a newly handmade linen lampshade.

Tynell is often referred to as ‘the man who illuminated Finland’. An apt title considering his prolific career, which spanned continents as well as decades. This light is a charming example of Tynell’s work which, with details such as the graceful manipulation of brass wire into organic shapes, shows his enduring exploration of materiality and form.
