Set of Four No.811 Josef Hoffmann

Description

A vintage set of model 811 chairs designed by Austrian architect Josef Hoffman in the mid- to late-1920s. The chair was featured on the front cover of Thonet-Mundus’ catalogue (Nr. 3404) of 1934. A version of the 811 without arms also on cover of Gebrüder Thonet's catalogue (Nr. 3208) of 1932. All chairs in this set were most probably made in Poland by Thonet, circa 1950, and have always been together.
The black lacquer on the chairs is original and has great depth. Each chair retains its original handwoven cane seat and back. Both sections of the wicker work are in good condition with only a few breaks and boast an even honey-coloured patina.
The use of cane provides comfort for the sitter and gives the piece a visual lightness. Moreover, the high contrast between the black lustre of the lacquer and naturally tanned wicker allows the design to speak clearly of its form and materials and so results in a chair with great integrity.
