Sussex Bench Morris & Co

Description

A Sussex bench designed by either Ford Maddox Brown or Philip Webb circa 1860 and made by Morris & Co before 1900.
The turned wood frame is solid beech and the seat woven rush cord. The patination on the bench is nothing less than exquisite. Thanks to over a century of gentle wear in places the natural beech has reemerged from the original ebonised finish. An original Arts and Crafts piece designed by one of the founding members of Morris & Co established in 1861. Variations of this deisgn were famously used by William & Jane Morris at Red House and Kelmscott House, and by their friends Edward Burne-Jones and Alfred Gilbert. Newnham College and the Fitzwilliam Museum, both in Cambridge also used the Sussex chair.
