Unique Art Deco Pendant
Netherlands, C. 1925

Description:

A unique metal and glass pendant light designed and made in the Netherlands circa 1925.
The lamp was bespoke made for an entrance hallway in Amsterdam hence the elongated proportions of the design.
Furniture that is fitted within an interior usually loose parts when uninstalled. However, this pendant is fully complete. The original suspending rod is still present as is the cylindrical ceiling rose.
The main body of the light is the faceted glass shade in conjunction with the large circular brass canopy, from which the shade hangs.
The glass shade is constructed of nine pieces of milk glass. Each segment of glass has been shaped and bent before being joined by soldered lead. Originally an amber-yellow coloured stripe was painted down the middle of each glass section, but this has been lost after decades of cleaning.
An antenna-esque finial drops from beneath the centre of where the glass segments meet. Cleverly, the finial contains shapes -namely two disks, two pole sections and a ball- which echo larger versions in the rest of the light.
The simple and sleek geometricity of the light makes the piece most redolent of Art Deco design. However, details such as the aforementioned connecting balls and lost yellow stripes are clearly inspired by Viennese Secessionism.
Completely re-wired to UK standards and PAT tested.
