1960s Soviet Textured Glass Table Lamp

Description:

A vintage 1960s Soviet table lamp with an intricate pressed glass shade.
The light was produced by the Preciosa company in or around the town of Kamenický Šenov in the most Northerly part of the Czech Republic, near its trijunction with Germany and Poland.
Essentially, Preciosa was the name given to the entity created following the Soviet’s nationalisation of approximately 25 Bohemian crystal firms in the Liberec Region from 1945.
The history of glassmaking in this region is incredibly rich, dating back to the 14th century. However, the first factory to specialise in the manufacture of crystal lighting, which the area remains known for today, was established in 1724. The palaces of Louis XV, Sultan Osman III and Empress Elizabeth of Russia all contained examples of crystal chandeliers from Bohemia.
Aesthetically, the main part of the lamp is the thick pressed glass shade. The elaborate design pressed within the cylindrical glass diffuser is essentially a chequerboard pattern.
Half of the chequerboard’s squares feature spherical bobbles or ‘dots’ whilst the other half contain horizontal stripes or ‘dashes’. Internally, stripes run vertically all the way around the inner circumference.
The base of the lamp is made of two sections of formed metal. The lover section has been lacquered orange whilst the upper part is brass.
Sympathetic to the age of the piece, the light has been rewired with a braided material covered flex in antique brown. A black inline switch operates the lamp.
