Copenhagen Town Hall
Construction of this magnificent municipal building began in 1892 and was completed in 1905. Conceived as a Gesamtkunstwerk, architect Martin Nyrop designed the totality of the Town Hall, including its exterior, accessories and furnishings, even the mosaic flooring.
The furniture in this collection would have, until recently, graced the building’s interiors. Its design reflects the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement, with simple construction, visible joinery and restrained decoration, expertly executed by master cabinetmaker Rudolph Rasmussen. Together, these elements express the idiosyncrasies of the Danish Art Nouveau style known as “Skønvirke”.
