Description:

This cabinet is an example of a bespoke commission of Bindesbøll’s cabinet exhibited in the Danish Pavilion at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris. Unique in its proportions and details, this cabinet takes the overall design of the original displayed in the faire, and refines its form. Noted specifically in the flayed curve of the cornicing at the top, and attention paid to universal colouring of the wood.

Bindesbøll was known primarily for his silverware and ceramic design; however, he is understood in academic circles as the father of Danish design and its cabinetmaking tradition. Predating the Style Modern by two decades, this design also differs from later aesthetically similar continental models in its construction. Vitally, this cabinet is made of 11 separate pieces which slot together through finely crafted timber joints to create the whole. A feature originally conceived for ease of transport to the faire, but which laid the grounding for the Nordic focus on disassemble-able furniture.

Flanking the decoratively uniform doors, two unobstructed architectural columns lock the piece together, aiding in its physical and visual stability. Geometric capitals finish the pilasters, and are the premier detail of the frontage. Four later mahogany discs have been added at the ordinal points.

Two later shelves have been installed to allow functionality as a linen closet. These can be removed, to allow full length access to the bobbin hooks hidden in its ceiling for coat storage.

Overall in good condition, wear commensurate with age.
