Arts and Crafts Oak Step Chair
Britain, late-19th century

£980

Description:

A convertible, oak step chair, designed and made in Britain between the late 19th and early 20th century.

A most coveted design from the turn of the century: a hinged top allows the step chair to fully convert into a set of steps. A functional, space-saving design perfectly suited to a library or a study.

The cutwork details on the chair back, alongside the pronounced, pyramidal joints which connect the rest to the chair, are a typical detail indicative of the emphasis on craft which came to epitomise the Arts and Crafts movement.

The chair is in excellent vintage condition, all signs of wear being commensurate with the age of the chair.

Although missing its inlaid leather steps, an almost identical step chair can be found in the National Trust collection at Sunnycroft House in Shropshire; a beautifully preserved family home containing over 1200 objects accumulated by the family over the last 100 years.
