Bamboo Floor Light

Description:

A bamboo and woven rattan floor lamp designed by Louis Sognot, France, 1960s. Heavily influenced by Art Deco and Cubism, Sognot was a skilled cabinetmaker with a focus on chic decorative, yet functional pieces for the ‘boudoir and bedroom’. Sognot’s early career saw an attraction towards precious and exotic woods, however, after the Second World War, he gravitated to a more humble materials palate, one reflective of the scarcity of goods and elevating the strain on manufacturers in France. 

Six bamboo poles work as external scaffolding for the off-white, newly upholstered linen lampshade. The lampshade is suspended by subtle stitched cotton loops between two woven rattan rings. This wooden ‘exoskeleton’ ensures that all materials are on display and equally appreciated, whilst also conveying a harmony between the unrefined texture of the bamboo and the fabric. A singular bulb sits inside of the cylindrical lampshade, offering a warm subdued glow. 

The light has been sympathetically re-wired using an ‘antique brown’ coloured fabric flex, the light switch is located on said flex.
