Set of Six Model 811 Chairs
Josef Hoffman, Late-1920s

Description:

A vintage set of six model 811 chairs designed by Austrian architect Josef Hoffman in the mid- to late-1920s. This version of the chair, without arms, was featured on the front cover of Gebrüder Thonet's catalogue (Nr. 3208) of 1932. All chairs in this set were most probably made in Poland by Thonet, circa 1955, and have always been together.
Each chair retains its original hand-woven cane backrest. The intricate wicker work is in good general condition but some of the chairs have a few broken strands.
The use of cane provides comfort for the sitter and gives the design a visual lightness.
Satisfying also is the even honey-coloured patina the chairs now boast. This golden colour has been achieved by the beech wood frames as well as the cane.
Today, the naturally tanned wicker and rich blonde wood are contrasted by the new vibrant Forest-Green upholstery.
