Child's Armchair
Michael Thonet, c.1905

Description:

A bentwood and cane child’s armchair in black lacquer by Thonet, Austria.

The chair features all of the attributes associated with the iconic Thonet design vernacular. All of the structural elements from the legs to the backrest have been expertly moulded in a sinuous fashion. The front legs curve upwards to form the armrests and meet the backrest. Similarly, the back legs, bent from one piece of beechwood in an ‘oxbow-like’ shape double as the backrest. The backrest also incorporates an internal loop for additional support and emphasising the craftsmanship. Handwoven cane sits within the circular frame of the seat, and underneath the seat is the paper stamp for the Thonet company.
