Large Lidded Ashtray
Carl Auböck

Description

A large lidded ashtray with carrying handle designed by Carl Auböck II and made by his werkstätte in Vienna circa 1950. The object is modeled on a 19th Century bed warming pan. However, the lid to the heavy bottomed brass dish also serves a very practical purpose -the levered cloche helps reduce the smell and smoke emitted by recently extinguished cigars/cigarettes. Most elements of the piece are made from solid sand cast brass, the exceptions are the screws which hinge the lid and hold in place the carved solid wenge wood handle. Stamped Auböck Made in Austria on the underside of the brass part of the handle. In excellent usable condition and boasting an even warm patina.
