Model 6687 Lounge Table Kaare Klint
Description
A model 6687 lounge table in mahogany designed by Kaare Klint in 1929 and made by cabinetmakers Rud. Rasmussen, Denmark, circa 1940.
On first inspection the design of the table seems to be incredibly restrained but over time many subtle and satisfying details can be found on this piece. In the main, the most impressive details are in how the sections of wood meet each other. Notice how the corners of the square shelf meet with the flat faces of the table legs. The distance that the legs are within the shelf is equal to the amount of the shelf that would protrude the other side of the legs were the corners not cut off. This connection adds visual interest although there is also practicality in this fitting. The increased surface area means the shelf is fixed most strongly this way. Similarly, the incised detailing down the legs on their corners and along the edge of the circumference of the shelf is an aesthetically pleasing element but also prevents the corners and edges from being damaged. Again, by creating two bordering edges which are less dramatic the weight of any object that bumped the table would be spread across more surface area.
A testament to the considerations above, the condition of the table is excellent and the rusty blonde colour of the solid mahogany used throughout and its patina is superb.
