Petite Space Age Metal Table Lamp
Italy, 1960s
A lacquered steel Space Age table lamp, designed and made in Italy in the 1960s. The surface of the metal exterior is an iconic orange, the hue most associated with the 1960s Space Age aesthetic. The circle cut-outs on the dome-like shade act as both windows into the lamp and a way of accenting the ‘mushroom’ shape of the lamp. Through the circular windows, the white walled interior can be seen bouncing and emphasising the warm glow of the light emanating from the bulb.
The petite size allows for ease of placement, whether it be placed on a desk, bookcase or bedside.
Overall, the construction of the lamp is simple, the bulb sits in a removable brass cage, nestled in the cylindrical base. A brass knop is screwed atop the dome-like shade, a simple and minimal way of fixing the piece together. The light has been sympathetically re-wired using antique-brown coloured fabric flex, the light switch is located on said flex.
