Set of 4
No.3105 “Bankstuhl” Chairs
Willy Guhl, 1959

£3,400

Description:

A set of 4 black lacquered “Bankstuhl” Chairs designed by Swiss designer, Willy Guhl in 1959.

This set of four dining chairs are emblematic of one of Willy Guhl's personal aphorisms, "achieving the most with minimum effort".

Whilst Guhl's designs in cement remain some of his most memorable, this dining set is similarly imbued with a sense of elevated functionalism. A simple design anchored in contrast, the angular, dark frames of this set are juxtaposed against the pale caned seat and backs.

Guhl declared that his designs "must be useful to people", and the "Bankstuhl" chair lives true to this assertion. The name "Bankstuhl" literally translates to "bench chair", referencing the secondary use for the set. When lined up, the chairs align to create a bench which would integrate seamlessly into any tight space as a refined occasional seating option.

Not just limited to the dining room, the "Bankstuhl" is truly a design to be lived with not around, just as Guhl intended.
