A deep-tufted Finnish rya rug by textile designer, Aksel Wilhelm Raitio. The rug was designed for Neovius, a Finnish textile manufacturer known for their rya rugs from the 1950s-1970s.
Entitled "Suopursuja" or "Wild Rosemary", a constellation of flowering branches occupies the centre-point of this deeply tufted rug. Bands of dark plaster-pink and rich terracottas frame the composition into three distinct registers, with the outer areas of chevrons articulated in butter-yellows and reds.
Rya rugs occupy an important place in Finnish textile design. With roots in Finland's coastline during the 15th century, when they were used by fishermen for warmth, the medium enjoyed a revival in the 20th century with complex, colourful graphic patterns becoming a national hallmark for the craft.
The rug is in good vintage condition with only minor marks to the fringing.
The rug also has a channel through which a pole can be threaded to aid the install of the piece of the wall.
